Medication Policies

The health office would like to remind you that there are specific state laws in Oregon regarding students taking medication at school (prescription or non-prescription). This is for your student's safety.

Here are some important rules to understand regarding self administration and school administration:

1. To administer prescription medication, we must have a valid prescription label from the pharmacy.

2. All medications (prescription and non-prescription) must come in the original packaging

3. Under no circumstances can a student share medication with another student.

4. If a student is going to self-carry medication they are only allowed to carry enough for a single day (inhalers are the exception).

Self Administration

  • A student is allowed to self-administer non-prescription medications when they are able to demonstrate the ability, developmentally and behaviorally, to self medicate and has permission to self-medicate from a school building administrator.
  • A student is allowed to self-administer prescription medications when they are able to demonstrate the ability, developmentally and behaviorally, to self administer medication and have permission to self-administer from a school building administrator, and a prescriber or registered nurse practicing in the school setting.

School Administration

  • To administer prescription medication, school personnel must have a written request from the student's parent/guardian which includes signed permission for school staff to give the medication.
  • Written instruction includes: (1) Name of student (2) Name of medication (3) Method (by mouth, etc.) (4) Dosage (5) Frequency—how often it is to be given
