Request for Personal Electronic Devices Exception

Exceptions

Exceptions to this policy are allowed when the use of the personal electronic device complies with the following terms:

  1. The student’s medical provider’s order for the care and treatment of a medical condition. Families seeking this exception must complete the “Request for Personal Electronic Devices Exception” form.
  2. The use of a personal electronic device, such as a cell phone or smart watch, is determined by the student’s IEP team or Section 504 team to be a necessary accommodation following an evaluation of the student’s individual needs. The decision must be clearly documented in the student’s IEP, as defined in ORS 343.035, or in the student’s Section 504 Plan developed in accordance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (29 U.S.C. § 794), or
  3. To accommodate the individual circumstances of a student, or to further specific educational outcomes for a student.  Families seeking this exception must complete the “Request for Personal Electronic Devices Exception” form.

This policy excludes time when students are not on school grounds and are not under the supervision of school personnel other than a school bus driver. That is, students may use their personal electronic devices during the bus ride to and from school, but personal electronic devices are not permitted during bus travel during field trips that occur during the school day.  In all circumstances, a student who uses their personal electronic device inappropriately or disruptively on the bus may have the device confiscated or access to it restricted during bus travel.
