Playgrounds

In the past, individual school PSOs raised funds to purchase playground equipment. This approach led to differences between schools in the amount, quality, and consistency of equipment, as well as challenges with maintaining and replacing parts.

TTSD is now centralizing the purchase and installation of playground equipment to ensure all schools have safe, inclusive, and engaging play spaces. These playgrounds will support students during the school day and continue to serve as community assets outside of school hours.

Each school will receive a large playground structure modeled after the one installed at Templeton Elementary in 2021. This structure includes slides, climbing features, sensory panels, and overhead elements.

School communities will have the opportunity to help select specific features through a survey. The Templeton structure has successfully supported the district’s largest student population, demonstrating that this model provides ample play opportunities for students.

Yes. In addition to the main playground structure, each school will receive standard “stand-alone” equipment. This includes multiple swing sets, a 4-person see-saw, sensory panels, and other play features designed to provide a variety of experiences for students.

Before considering additional equipment, we ask that schools first have time to use the playground equipment provided by the district. After students and staff have had the opportunity to experience the new playground, schools and PSOs can discuss whether any additional features or equipment may be beneficial.

The playgrounds are designed to provide accessible and engaging play opportunities for all students. Features will include:

• Poured-in-place rubberized surfacing to improve wheelchair accessibility
• ADA-accessible ramps and transfer platforms to increase access to elevated play areas
• Integrated play spaces that encourage all students to play together, rather than separate areas for different abilities
• Sensory play elements, including tactile and auditory features
• A variety of play experiences, including high- and low-challenge activities, social and quiet spaces, and both ground-level and elevated play options
