Glad You're Here

Regular attendance is a crucial first step in sustaining learning.

When students miss school, they miss out. But in TTSD and across Oregon, only about 2 of every 3 students (66%) regularly attend school.

That means that about 1 in every 3 is considered chronically absent. In Oregon, chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of instructional days – whether absences are excused or unexcused. Since the pandemic, attendance rates have fallen substantially statewide.

With school calendars set at about 180 days a year, a student who on average misses two or more days a month will be considered chronically absent. Typically, attendance rates are lowest for high school juniors and seniors, and kindergartners.

Why does attendance matter? Research indicates that lower attendance rates can lead to high school dropouts. Educators work hard to build a strong sense of belonging, but those connections fray when students are not consistently in class.

In January 2026, TTSD began piloting a new attendance tracking and messaging system called Attendance Plus, tied to our ParentSquare communications platform. We will regularly share attendance data on these pages as it becomes available.

Along the way, our schools will consistently reinforce the importance of attendance. We’re Glad You’re Here!
