Electronic Device Use Expectations

As we welcome students back to school this fall, it’s important to clarify some key expectations regarding the use of personal electronic devices while our middle and high school students are at school.  With the increasing use of and reliance on cell phones and other personal devices for social interaction and entertainment, we’d like to partner together in transitioning students back to school smoothly.  Working in cooperation with you, as families, to ensure that class time is reserved for engaging, interactive, disruption-free learning is crucial to student success.

So that class time can remain focused on learning, all of our comprehensive secondary schools will have policies in place that limit the use of personal electronic devices.  During classroom instruction, student cell phones, earbuds, gaming devices, etc. need to remain silent and out of sight.  In addition, we expect that students refrain from checking devices during class times and that all class time is devoted to learning activities as assigned by teachers.

We understand that many students have built up a dependence on their personal devices and that transitioning into school with these expectations may be a challenge.  To support each student in meeting these expectations, we’re committed to thoroughly teaching, practicing and reinforcing them.

We acknowledge that we can’t do this alone.  We need your help in order to maintain our sharp focus on learning.  To support your child in meeting these expectations we ask that you refrain from texting or calling students during class times.  Please contact your school’s main office should you need to get in touch with your child during the school day.  For quick reference, a list of schools and their main office phone numbers can be found below.

You’ll likely be hearing from your child’s school in the near future with regards to specifics regarding expectations for student behavior.  Should you have questions in the meantime, please contact your child’s school.

We appreciate your partnership and support and look forward to seeing our students back at school next week!
