Tigard, OR, May 1st, 2026 — Metzger Elementary School has been awarded a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the State Library of Oregon.

Metzger Elementary has received a $3000 federal LSTA grant to be used for expanding library capacity through the purchase of new library shelving.

Upon learning that Metzger Elementary received the LSTA grant, Kasey Fernandez, District Librarian, said, “This generous donation provided more shelf space within Metzger Elementary’s English and Spanish library collections. This allowed us to grow each collection, add professional-quality library signage, and face more titles outward so that it is easier for students to find books that they are excited to read.”

The federal funds were used to purchase eight new library shelves, creating a more accessible and welcoming space for Metzger's student readers — including a growing collection of Spanish-language materials serving the school's multilingual community.

Each year, the State Library of Oregon leverages state funding to receive a two-to-one match of federal funds under the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Grants to States program, administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The State Library uses this funding to support libraries throughout the state, including grant opportunities for academic, public, school, and special libraries, as well as for federally recognized tribes in Oregon.
